Sustainability
At the David Ross Education Trust, we are committed to building a greener, more sustainable future for our students, staff and communities. Every academy plays a part in reducing our environmental impact and inspiring young people to take positive action for the planet. On this page, you’ll find our school’s Climate Action Plan along with updates on projects and activities that showcase how we are putting sustainability into practice.

Eco Warriors Launch New Recycling Campaign
Our amazing Booth Wood Eco Warriors have been working hard to help us improve the amount of recycling we do as a school. Recently, they teamed up with The Hut to learn more about community recycling efforts.
The Eco Warriors visited Craig at The Hut, where he showed them the different types of recycling that take place there. The children were enthusiastic, asked thoughtful questions, and were keen to get involved in making a positive difference at Booth Wood.
After half term, the Eco Warriors will be launching two new recycling banks in school:
- Bread Bag Recycling Bank – for plastic bags that bread products come in
- Tablet Blister Pack Recycling Bank – for empty medicine tablet casings
Both recycling points will open from Friday 17th April, and we hope all our families can help support this new campaign.
Together, we can make Booth Wood Academy even greener! 🌍

Reducing our Carbon Footprint - FOOD
As a school we feel it is important for children to know how to grow food sustainably and understanding the importance of many of the elements that take place when succssfully growing crops. We grow our own fruit and vegetables. The children start this in reception and can follow this all the way through their schooling until year 6.
The GREEN Library
Our brilliant Eco Warriors have created a Green Library space designed to inspire and educate others about the importance of the climate and the natural world. This welcoming area encourages everyone to learn how small actions can make a big difference, from caring for our environment to living more sustainably. It’s a wonderful example of our pupils leading the way in protecting our planet — and there’s so much more to discover!
Eco Warrior Awards
Our Eco Warriors carry out daily checks in classrooms and around the school to ensure that staff and pupils are doing their best to reduce, reuse and recycle. They carefully monitor the use of electricity, including lights, heating and cooling, helping everyone to be more mindful of their energy use.
Each Friday, the Eco Warriors award a certificate to the class that has demonstrated the most eco‑friendly behaviour. Recently, they also awarded a certificate to members of staff who have been car‑sharing, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions in the local area.
Sustainable Forest School
The school has a wonderful forest school that supports the learning of our own pupils and also those pupils from a local specialist school. To ensure that the forest continues to thrive and is sustainable over time, the school reuses and repurposes the bark and trunks of fallen or felled trees on site to replenish the wood stock. This also enhances the forest with naturally grown amenities, eg converting the trunk into seats.
